Trey Anastasio revived his orchestral format at Morrison, Colo.’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre on Sunday, June 7. Accompanied by the Colorado Symphony for their first collaboration since 2012, the Phish frontman broke from the standard solo and duo arrangements of his current acoustic tour for sweeping chamber expansions of 15 favorites from the foundational jamband and his solo catalog.
On the storied outdoor stage, Anastasio stood before the band and let rich surges of bliss and bravado guide him into a more peaceful and passionate side of his extemporization. That effect coursed through symphony debuts of “Shade,” “Taste” and Ghosts of the Forest side “Drift While You’re Sleeping,” amid other expansive renditions of “First Tube,” “More,” “Petrichor,” “Water in the Sky,” “Divided Sky,” “If I Could” (first symphonic since 2009), and “Drift While You’re Sleeping,” “Stash,” “Mercy,” “The Lizards,” “What’s the Use?” and finally “Harry Hood.” After briefly departing from the stage, Anastasio showed his New York pride by returning in a Jalen Brunson jersey, prompting a “Knicks in four” chant from the crowd, then closed with “You Enjoy Myself.”
Anastasio’s Red Rocks show was his first symphonic performance since a standalone engagement at Venna, Va.’s Wolf Trap in June 2024, which itself was his first presentation of the pioneering format since 2017. There’s been no shortage of opportunities to catch the artist in innovative configurations since, including his most recent solo performances in the Beacon Jams at New York’s Beacon Theatre.
On Wednesday, June 10, Anastasio will perform with the Kansas City Symphony at Kansas City, Mo.’s Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. He’ll return to his acoustic tour with a stand in Minneapolis on June 13, then continue with six further shows through June 24. Find tickets and more information at trey.com.
